In Vietnam, you will discover an interesting fact: the Vietnamese love rice vermicelli. There are so many dishes in Vietnam based on rice vermicelli such as Phở (rice vermicelli broth with beef or chicken), Bún chả (rice vermicelli served with grilled pork and nuoc mam sauce), Bún riêu cua (soup with rice vermicelli and crab dumplings), etc.
Horizon Vietnam Travel is pleased to present the recipe for one of Vietnam’s typical dishes based on rice vermicelli: Bún bò Nam Bộ. You can find in French restaurants its equivalent: the Bun Bo. It’s a really delicious dish and easy to make!
Summary
Ingredients (for 4 people)
1/ 300 gr of beef fillet
2/ Aromatic herbs: mint, coriander, green salad
3/ Crushed peanuts
4/ 2 sliced garlic cloves
5/ 1 onion
6/ Soybean sprouts
7/ 5 minced shallots (optional)
8/ 1kg of rice vermicelli
9/ Oyster sauce
10/ For the sauce: nuoc mam, sugar, 1 lemon (or rice vinegar), water
Preparation:
Step 1: Cut beef into thin slices, then mix them in a bowl with 1 teaspoon of salt (or nước mắm), 1 spoon of oyster sauce and pepper. Let the beef marinate for 5 minutes.
Step 2: While waiting for the marinated beef, you make the sweet-sour fish sauce. Add with the ratio 1-4: 1 spoon of nuoc mam, 1 spoon of sugar, 1 spoon of rice vignaire (or lemon juice) and 4 spoons of water. Mix them well. You can make more sauce according to your request.
Step 3: Prepare the bowl of Bún bò Nam Bộ: Cut the green salad into 4-5 pieces, then put them in the bowl. Then add rice vermicelli, aromatic herbs in small pieces and soy sprouts.
Step 4: (Optional) Fry 4 scarves full of oil. When the oil is hot, add the shallots. When they turn golden, put them on a paper towel.
Step 5: In a frying pan, skip marinated beef with sliced onions over high heat. Adjust the seasoning. (Note: Do not salt too much because after the beef will be mixed with the sauce).
Step 6: Put sautéed beef in the bowl, pour sweet-sour fish sauce and add fried peanuts and shallots (optional). Mix well and enjoy this typical dish of Vietnam!
