The overnight train journey from HANOI – HUE
Did you know that trains in Vietnam are known to be the slowest in the world! This is due to the narrowness of the rails which limit speed.
Indeed, for a long journey of 688 km, travelers take a little over 13 hours to arrive at Hue station. It has nothing to do with French TGVs, but it’s already a big step forward for Vietnam in recent years!
Most of the trains that serve this line have their names beginning with SE. There are many departures every day. From Hanoi there are SE 1, SE 3 – the two fastest trains, then SE 5, SE 7, SE 19.
Very recently, the SE 23 and SE 24 (SE 23 for the Hanoi-Hue route and SE 24 for the Hue-Hanoi route) classified in the 5-star category have just been put into service by the Vietnam Railways which presented them as having the best comfort according to international standards.

The train makes its way as close as possible to the houses, this also explains its limited speed, but a picturesque journey is guaranteed!
So far, the Livitrans company, associated with the General Railway Company of Vietnam, is known as the company with the best quality of wagons and offering the most suitable services for Western travelers.
The price of a Livitrans train ticket is 1,250,000 dong and you will have a sleeping berth with mattress in a four-berth cabin with air conditioning.
For the two 5-star superior class Hanoi–Hue trains (SE 23 for the Hanoi-Hue route and SE 24 for the Hue-Hanoi route) which have just been put into operation, the ticket prices vary between 20 dollars and 50 dollars. dollars depending on the categories (hard seat, soft seat, beds of different floors – the lowest costs the most).
Vietnam Railways has also set up good quality cars: a ticket for a soft seat costs around 30 dollars, while the ticket price for a bed with a mattress varies between 35 and 45 dollars. A hard bed (without a mattress naturally costs less!)
If you want to make sure you get a seat in a higher category, you should always book well in advance, especially on the occasion of the country’s public holidays (Southern Liberation Day-May Day, the traditional New Year’s Day ). If you are making an organized trip to Vietnam, it will be best to entrust this work to your local travel agency, specifying your desires. In principle, you can go directly to the Vietnam Railways counters located in the main building of Hanoi Railway Station at 120 Le Duan.
